Tips for Picking Your Balloon Colours

Choosing your balloon colours is one of the most exciting parts of putting together a bunch. Whether you're planning a birthday, baby shower or special celebration, a few simple tricks can help you create a colour combination you love.

Start With Your Occasion

Whether you're celebrating a birthday, baby shower, milestone or something in between, your occasion is a great place to start when choosing your colours. Think about the overall feel you want to create — soft and subtle, bright and playful, or something a little more sophisticated. This will help guide your colour choices and give you a starting point for building your bunch.

Choose Your Main Colours

Start by choosing two or three main colours that you love. They don't need to match perfectly — in fact, combining slightly different shades of the same colour can add depth and make your bunch feel more interesting. If you're starting with a themed or feature foil balloon, you can also use the colours within its design as inspiration for the rest of your bunch.

Don't Forget Neutrals

Neutrals can be the secret to bringing your whole colour palette together. Adding white, cream or other softer neutral tones can help break up stronger colours and create a more balanced bunch. They’re also a great way to soften a bright combination without taking away from the colours you love.

The Rule of Three

When you're building a bunch with more than two latex balloons, we generally recommend using a minimum of three different colours. It might seem like two colours would create a beautifully coordinated bunch, but once you start adding multiple balloons, two colours can sometimes feel a little too divided.

For example, pairing three black balloons with three gold balloons can result in all the black sitting on one side and all the gold on the other, rather than the colours flowing naturally throughout the bunch.

Introducing a third colour helps break everything up and creates a more balanced, cohesive look. For a classic black and gold combination, adding white, cream or even a softer metallic tone can make all the difference — you'll still get that black and gold feel, just with a more polished finish.

A little rule we like to follow: if you're choosing more than two latex balloons, choose at least three colours.

Mix Your Finishes

Colour isn't the only way to add interest to your balloon bunch. Mixing different finishes — such as standard, pearl and metallic balloons — can add depth and dimension to your combination. Even when you're working within a simple colour palette, varying the finishes can make the overall bunch feel a little more special.
