How Many Balloons Do I Need in a Bunch?

Choosing how many balloons to include in your bunch can be tricky — especially if you’ve never ordered balloons before. The right number really depends on where your balloons will be displayed and the type of balloons you choose. Whether you're looking for something simple or want a bunch with a little more impact, here’s our guide to getting the balance just right.

Start With Where Your Balloons Are Going

Before deciding how many balloons you need, the first question to ask is: where is your bunch going to sit?

A bunch sitting on a table needs to be approached very differently from one sitting on the floor. The size of your balloons matters too — particularly if you're adding a large number or supershape balloon.

Here's our simple guide to getting the balance right.

For a Tabletop Bunch: 3–5 Balloons

When it comes to balloons sitting on a table, we think less is more.

We recommend a minimum of 3 balloons for a simple bunch and generally wouldn't go beyond 5 balloons (or 6 if there are high ceilings). This gives you enough to create a beautiful combination without the bunch becoming too full or overwhelming the table.

You can create plenty of interest within a smaller bunch by mixing complementary colours and different finishes, or by including a feature foil balloon.

For a Floor Bunch: 7–9 Balloons

If your bunch is made up of regular-sized foil and latex balloons and will be sitting on the floor, you'll generally need a few more balloons to give it enough height and presence.

We'd consider 5 balloons the absolute minimum for a floor bunch, but for a fuller, more balanced look, we generally recommend around 7–9 balloons.

This gives you more room to play with colour and texture and helps the bunch feel substantial enough to fill the space around it.

Adding a Large Number or Supershape Balloon

Large number and supershape balloons are a little different — they're designed to make an impact and can definitely work as a statement piece all on their own.

If you'd like to add latex balloons underneath a large number or supershape, we'd generally recommend 3–5 balloons maximum.

Adding too many balloons underneath can make the overall arrangement extremely tall and can take away from the feature balloon itself. Keeping the bunch underneath a little simpler allows your statement balloon to remain the focus while still adding colour and fullness.

Sometimes, One Balloon Is Enough

Not every celebration needs a full bunch.

A large number, supershape or statement foil balloon can look fantastic by itself — particularly when you're working with a smaller space or simply want to mark an occasion with something special.

You can always add a few coordinating latex balloons if you'd like a little extra colour, but don't feel like you need to build a large bunch around every feature balloon.

Think About the Space

The size of the room or venue can also help guide your decision. A smaller bunch can look perfectly at home in an intimate space, while a larger room may need something fuller to create the same visual impact.

And remember, more isn't always better. A thoughtfully chosen combination of colours, sizes and shapes can often have more impact than simply adding more balloons.

A Little Tip From Us

Still not sure? As a simple starting point, think 3–5 balloons for a table and 7–9 regular balloons for a fuller floor bunch. If you're choosing a large number or supershape, let that be the star — enjoy it on its own or add just 3–5 coordinating balloons underneath. And if you're still unsure, we're always happy to help you create a bunch that suits your celebration, your space and your budget.
